Vertical Farming

Welcome!

This site was created to compile information on the emerging technique of Vertical Farming.

What is vertical farming?

Vertical farming is a method of agriculture where crops are layered vertically, usually within a controlled environment where resources are distributed onto the crops.

How can vertical farming affect my community?

Vertical farms have many unique benefits that can improve food security and offer more sustainable agriculture and land use.
In Augusta, Georgia, the Georgia Cancer Center is operating a "micro-farm" that follows the idea of vertical farming to serve leafy greens to the local community, which helps to improve local food security.
In Jackson, Wyoming, the Vertical Harvest is another vertical farm that serves its local communities with fresh produce, helping to reduce the transportation costs that were generated

Are there downsides to vertical farming?

The benefits are only realised if vertical farms are used for crops that use less resources and can be rapidly produced, like leafy greens or smaller fruits. The cost of sustaining the controlled environment becomes too great for more involved crops.
Simpler crops are where vertical farms excel as the alternative to traditional farms.
